It’s now six in a row for the Colorado Avalanche, and their starting goaltender played a big role in that.
37 saves, many of them on high end chances, earned Alexandar Georgiev the first star of the night, as the Avalanche defeated the Washington Capitals 3-2. His coach had high praise for the performance after the game.
Watch and listen to what Georgiev had to say after the game, and check out some post-game quotes from Andrew Cogliano and Head Coach Jared Bednar.

Cogliano on his goal and his line:
Our line did a good job of getting pucks off the boards and winning those battles. At the end of the day, that’s where goals are going to probably be scored most of the time. I beat my guy to the net and got a tip on it. Newy had a great game, he was skating. I think we’re just a line, we just need to continue to play good defensively and take our chance when we get them.
Cogliano on the consistency of playing together with O’Connor all year:
I don’t think we change much about what we’re doing. I think we just play a simple game. We want to forecheck, we want to play in the offensive zone. We take pride in our defensive game.
Bednar on Georgiev:
I’m happy that we were able to get the two points to put us up the standing again. That’s our focus. I think the main reason we got that was because “Georgie” was excellent in goal. He was our best player, for sure.
Bednar on becoming the winningest coach in franchise history:
I’m glad it’s here and gone so we can stop talking about it, to be honest with you. As far as the record goes, I’m glad it’s over and done with.
Bednar on if this is the most consistent Newhook has looked at center:
I think so, yeah. We’ve seen flashes of his offense at center. It seems like he frees himself up to skate a little bit better on the wing. I feel like it’s a challenge to play goal line to goal line and have a big responsibility down low, sorting things out with the movement and what not. Closing plays out when you get guys near and around the boards, but that’s the two areas where I feel like he’s greatly improved this time around at center. We’ll continue to monitor that.
Bednar on his teams play:
We scored a couple timely goals, but we just didn’t look sharp. It wasn’t lack of focus, but it looked like we lacked energy. Sometimes you try to do too much. I just didn’t think we had the jump and energy we needed. That led to a bunch of mental mistakes with the puck and without the puck. We’ll take the win and address our concerns before the Anaheim game.
