It’s time once again for one my favorite Olympic phenomena: Athletes getting photos snapped of them biting their medals.
We saw it a lot in Tokyo, and it’s happening once again in Beijing, as it has for years and years’ worth of Olympics. Why is that? As I wrote last year, “The biting comes from what people mining for gold used to do long ago. If they found gold, they’d bite into it. Because gold was soft, the bite would leave a mark, and you’d know it wasn’t, say, fool’s gold that could break your teeth if you bit hard enough.”
At this point though? It just makes for a good photo. And here are a few from Beijing:
