In a blog post from the company, previous BioWare general manager Aaryn Flynn will depart the studio as former GM Casey Hudson will return to the role.
With the recently-released Mass Effect: Andromeda and the upcoming Anthem in the pipeline, BioWare’s slate of work for the next few years is sure to busy, while a new post from the company has revealed some change-ups in the company’s creative team moving forward.
In a blog post from the company, Casey Hudson announced that he will be returning to BioWare as the incoming General Manager of the studio, while Aaryn Flynn will be exiting the studio. The change in leadership at BioWare marks Hudson’s return to the company after leaving three years ago, where Hudson worked at Microsoft in a lead role to develop the company’s HoloLens technology and experiences.
Hudson explained in the post that when leaving BioWare three years ago it was “the most difficult decision of my career,” and added that “I needed some time off, needed a bit of a change, and wanted to get involved in the new wave of disruptive technologies that were emerging.” After describing those times as “transformative,” Hudson explained that he is “thrilled to have to the opportunity to return to lead BioWare – a studio that I think of as home.”
While Flynn has not provided a statement or reason for his departure from the studio, Hudson added in the blog post that he wishes Flynn “the very best in the future,” and called back to their days working together on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and thanking Flynn for his work in “setting the foundation for Anthem,” the studio’s upcoming new IP. Hudson closed out the blog post with one more message regarding Aaryn’s work and what lies ahead for the studio:
I think I speak for everyone who has worked with Aaryn – and our fans – when I say thank you for everything. BioWare continues to hold a special magic – full of profoundly talented people, and an inspiring creative energy. When I look at the stunning progress Aaryn and the team has made with Anthem, and the other projects in the works, I truly believe our best is yet to come.
UPDATE: BioWare has also published an accompanying blog post from Aaryn Flynn providing some clearer insights into his departure from the studio.
In the post, Flynn explained a bit more on his leaving BioWare, as he had been part of the company for 17 years and entered the company right after graduating from University, and worked on many of the studio’s biggest titles such as Neverwinter NightsStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and Jade Empire.
Specifically, Flynn expressed that he had been “contemplating changes” for some time in his life, and implies that he is looking for new opportunities and challenges in his career, and will be working with Casey “over the next couple of weeks to help catch him up and do my part to set him up for success to be the best GM he can be.” He explained a little more in his closing thoughts on his substantial time with BioWare and those he worked with:
In closing, let me thank our players for everything they’ve given us over these many years, and to say from the bottom of my heart how important you are to me and the rest of BioWare. I have gone to work every day knowing that I am fortunate to have all of the opportunities I have had at BioWare because of you. Doing whatever I could to help our developers create some of the best games in the industry for you all has been the most humbling experience of my life. Now, I’ll be playing BioWare’s games in the future from an exciting new perspective – yours 😊
